Biography of Ljubica Cuca Sokić

 

Ljubica Cuca Sokić (9 December 1914 – 9 January 2009) was a Serbian painter. She was born in Bitola.

She attended the high school in Belgrade, where Zora Petrović was her professor. She was also taught painting by Beta Vukanović, Ljuba Ivanović and Ivan Radović. Ljubica Sokić worked and presented her works in galleries in Paris, in the time between 1936 and 1939. Having returned from Paris to Belgrade, she presented her works independently for the first time in 1939 in Belgrade pavilion ″Cvijeta Zuzorić". She was one of the founders of the art group "Desetorica" ("The Ten"). She was a professor at the Academy of Visual Arts in Belgrade between 1948 and 1972. In 1968 she became a corresponding member of Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and from 1978 Academician. Besides painting, she created illustrations for children's books and magazines. She also worked in cinematography.

Her paintings are described as intimistic. At first she painted still life, landscapes, figures and portraits. Later she was moving towards simplifying forms, geometry and moderate abstraction. At times she used collage and experimental materials techniques.

She died on 9 January 2009 in Belgrade and was buried on 13 January at that city's Novo Groblje cemetery.

Akademski slikar Ljubica Sokić, rođena je u Bitolju. Umetničku školu u Beogradu upisala je 1930. godine. Slikarstvo je studirala u Beogradu i Parizu.

Od 1936. godine do 1939. boravila je u Francuskoj gde je prvi put izlagala sa grupom umetnika u Pariskoj galeriji. Posle povratka u Beograd, počinje samostalno da izlaže.

Bila je jedan od osnivača grupe "Desetorica" 1940. godine.

Osim slikarstvom, bavila se i ilustracijama knjiga i časopisa i izradom skica za filmove.

Bila je redovan profesor na Akademiji likovnih umetnosti u Beogradu od 1948. godine do 1972.

Dopisni član Srpske Akademije nauka i umetnosti postala je 1968. godine a 1978. godine i redovni član.

Njeno slikarstvo opisuje se kao "intimističko". U početku je slikala mrtve prirode, pejzaže, figure i portrete.

Kasnije je težila ka uprošćavanju formi, geometrizaciji i umerenoj apstrakciji. Povremeno je koristila tehnike kolaža i eksperimentalnih materijala.
